How do I navigate through your website?

When viewed on a desktop or tablet in landscape orientation, our website displays a menu bar. Click or tap to navigate to your chosen page.

If you are using a mobile phone or tablet (in portrait orientation), then you will see a "hamburger" menu at the top of your screen; tapping this icon will open up the website page options for you. Tap the "hamburger" menu again to close it.

To return to our Home page, either select it from the menu, or simply click or tap our WHaCS logo in our header picture.

What are the black buttons at the top of most of your web pages?

Well spotted! Many of our pages do have buttons at the top, just below the page title. These buttons are really to better help you navigate the page content, especially when viewing on a mobile device such as a phone.

Clicking or tapping these buttons will take you to the relevant section of the page you are viewing; the benefit is less scrolling is required!

Why are various words underlined on your website?

Underlined words indicate a link (URL) to either another part of our website that we think will be useful to you or else an external website.

The wording will be written in a way to make it clear where the link will take you when you click or tap it.

Is there an easy way to go back to the top of a web page?

Yes, there are a couple of ways to return quickly to the top of a page.

If you are using a desktop or laptop, then as you move down the web page, you will see an arrow appear towards the bottom of the right hand scroll bar.

The arrow looks like the image below.

Clicking this arrow will take you straight back to the top of the web page you are on.

On a phone or tablet, you will see a similar arrow to do this.

Additionally, many mobile devices now allow you to simply tap the top of the screen.

Does your website offer a dark mode for evening viewing?

We do not currently have the functionality within our website design to offer a "dark mode", even if your device is set up to use one. Unfortunately, it is not as simple as inverting the colours, and Spanglefish has not yet been able to develop this option. Many websites still do not offer a dark mode, including the BBC.

One possible workaround is to use your device's reader function, where available, and adjust the display settings to invert the colours. However, this does not always work as intended, and the reader function may not display all the content on a page.

Can I tell which pages have recently been updated?

Yes indeed you can! The footer of every web page has a link to our Sitemap and this highlights those pages that have had a recent update.

How can I locate an old news story not visible on the News page?

This website is relatively new and was set up in early 2025; no news stories will be dated prior to this.

As our collection of news stories grows, there is a limit to how many we can display directly on the News page. However, if you click or tap into any news story, you will then see a further panel giving you links to the last 30 news stories posted.

If you need to view a story even further back in time, then our Sitemap will give you access to it. (The link to this is shown on the footer of every webpage.)

Do I need to be a WHaCS member to access the whole website?

Most of this website is fully accessible to members and non-members alike.

There is one area of our website restricted to members, which can be accessed using login credentials and provides access to a range of archived materials of interest.

If you are not a member and wish to join, then please see this section of our Membership page.

I am a WHaCS member, where do I log in?

There is no need to log in for most of your access to our website.

If you are wanting to access the Members Only area of the website, then you do need to log in. You will see a button for this on the Home page, or else you can navigate to this log in section of the Membership page.

How are purchases and donations processed on your website?

Transactions on our website are powered through links to PayPal. After making your selection on our website, you will be taken to the PayPal platform to complete your payment.

You will clearly see that your transaction is with the Wollaton Historical and Conservation Society, indicated by both our name and logo.

Your secure transaction can be completed both with and without a PayPal account. You can also use a credit or debit card of your own choice.

After the payment has processed, PayPal will confirm this and then redirect you back to our website. Once back on our website, you will see a further acknowledgment screen.

Do I need to live in Wollaton to join WHaCS?

Absolutely not. We have many members who do not live in the village of Wollaton itself. We welcome any person who wishes to join our society, with full details being provided on this section of our Membership page.

Even if you are unable to travel to our meetings due to distance or mobility, you can still benefit from all the other resources we offer.

How do I get to your meetings?

Meetings are detailed on this section of our Events page.

If you live close to Wollaton but find it difficult to attend meetings because of health or transport issues, then please do let us know and we will see if we can help. Please use our Contact form.
