Wollaton Historical & Conservation Society

Unlocking the past, securing the future

Welcome to Wollaton Historical

Mission & Purpose

The Wollaton Historical & Conservation Society is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the principal conservation areas, which include the old village and Wollaton Park.

To achieve this, the Society encourages historic research and actively seeks to engage people living throughout Wollaton in learning more about the area’s rich history. By doing so, they contribute to the preservation and continued enjoyment of this historic landscape for future generations.

About Us

In 1972 the Wollaton Village Preservation Society was formed in the face of a threatened redevelopment of our historic village square, which happily was averted. Researching local history has become an important part of the Society's work and so in 2011 we changed our name to reflect this. Now we are known as the Wollaton Historical & Conservation Society (abbreviated to WHaCS) and often simply called "Wollaton Historical".

Over the years the Society has many achievements to celebrate. Notable highlights are the restoration of the 16th century Wollaton Dovecote and more recently the initiation of the project to restore the 18th century Wollaton Walled Garden, within Wollaton Park.

A couple of articles on our website, Wollaton History and Wollaton Village Trail, will give you a brief introduction to the area. If you seek a more comprehensive history of Wollaton, then clearly many other reference sources exist.

Some booklets available for purchase are on our Publications page and websites we think might be helpful are on our Links page.

Activities

Across the year there are numerous events, some are run directly by ourselves, whilst others are run in conjunction with various local groups and voluntary organisations.

Key activities:

  • WHaCS meetings take place on the 4th Wednesday of the month, from September to April (excluding December), at St Leonard's Community Centre in Wollaton. From 7.15pm there is opportunity for a tea/coffee/social, then our guest speaker starts at 7.45pm. Entry is free for Society members and non-members are welcome, paying £3 at the door.
  • The Wollaton Dovecote is opened and run by WHaCS volunteers on selected dates, from May through to September; inside we have the Wollaton Village Dovecote Museum. Special exhibitions are organised alongside our permanent displays and we offer access to a wealth of local research materials. A free guided walk around Wollaton Village takes place on open days.
  • The Wollaton Walled Garden Festivals are run in the spring, summer and autumn; these are a fantastic example of our active partnership within the local community. Have you visited the amazing Wollaton Walled Garden yet?

See our Events page for full details.
