Unlocking the past, securing the future

Welcome to Wollaton Historical

Discover Wollaton’s rich history and help us protect its unique heritage for current and future generations.

Our Purpose

The Wollaton Historical & Conservation Society is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the principal conservation areas, which include the old village and Wollaton Park.

The Society promotes historical research and encourages residents across Wollaton to take an active interest in the area’s rich heritage, helping ensure this unique historic environment is protected and enjoyed by future generations.

About Us

The Wollaton Village Preservation Society was formed in 1972 in response to a proposed redevelopment of the historic village square, which was successfully averted. Researching and sharing local history became an increasingly important part of the Society’s work, and in 2011 the name was changed to reflect this. Today, we are the Wollaton Historical & Conservation Society (WHaCS), often referred to simply as “Wollaton Historical”.

The Society has many achievements to its name, including the restoration of the 16th-century Wollaton Dovecote and the initiation of the project to restore the 18th-century Wollaton Walled Garden within Wollaton Park.

We continue to protect Wollaton’s heritage while promoting a wider understanding of its history.

The Wollaton History and Wollaton Village Trail articles provide a brief introduction to the area.

Activities

Across the year there are numerous events. Some are organised directly by the Society, while others are run in collaboration with local groups and voluntary organisations.

Key activities:

  • WHaCS meetings take place on the fourth Wednesday of the month, from September to April (excluding December), at St Leonard's Community Centre in Wollaton. From 7.15pm there is an opportunity for tea, coffee and socialising, followed by a guest speaker at 7.45pm. Entry is free for members; non-members are welcome (£3 at the door).
  • Wollaton Dovecote is opened and run by WHaCS volunteers on selected dates from May to September. Inside is the Wollaton Village Dovecote Museum, with permanent displays, special exhibitions, and access to a wide range of local research materials. A free guided walk around the village is available on open days.
  • Wollaton Walled Garden Festivals are held in spring, summer and autumn. These are a great example of our active partnership within the local community. Have you visited the Wollaton Walled Garden yet?
