Wollaton families
A group of members of Wollaton Historical & Conservation Society has undertaken a study of old Wollaton families, and this interest continues. Online research and study of journals and archives, often uncovers a mystery.
Research using information in census records, online data and documents available at Nottinghamshire Archives, as well as other local historical records, there are names of families living in Wollaton in the 1800s whose families still live in the area. It is hoped that the Family History Group team can connect those families, their homes, and family history to form an important record of village life. Results to date can be seen in folders at the Dovecote Museum, and make interesting reading.
One of our team, Steph Johnstone, has completed research work on Bramcote Lane and St Leonard's Cemeteries, photographing all the stones and compiling as much information as could be found about the people themselves.
Did you grow up in Wollaton or surrounding areas, or other parts of the Middleton Estate such as Trowell and Cossall, for example? What can you recall? Names, locations, dates and anecdotes are always of interest and will help our team piece together a snapshot of life in this area over the years.
Here is a list of the family surnames we have discovered which go back in time in Wollaton and so are of value to the area of research.
